October 1st-7th is Banned Books Week. This year's theme is Let Freedom Read. It is important to note that most books are challenged and not banned. According to the American Library Association: "A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials [. . .] In 2022 the ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 1,269 book challenges [. . .] and most were by or about LGBTQIA+ persons, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color."
