Today happens to be National School Principal Appreciation Day, but we are thankful every day for our Charleston CUSD#1 School Principals! "It goes without saying that Principals work intensely to learn the skills necessary to do their work, lead their staff through the work, and model what matters most for the betterment of the staff and students they serve daily." A huge shoutout to our principals for consistently knowing, going, and showing the way to learning and leading every day!

We would like to provide more information about last Friday's inadvertent intruder alert to help ease anxieties and answer questions. First, a new intercom system that is not yet fully operational is being installed in our schools. Absent disclosing the working nature of our security systems, the intruder alarm was activated. Within seconds, an "all clear" announcement was made. Reports from law enforcement and staff depicted how students, staff and law enforcement did exactly what should have been done. Within minutes, a message was sent to students, staff and parents about the inadvertent alert. School officials immediately notified the equipment installers to modify the system to prevent that from happening again. Regretfully, such a happening created feelings of insecurity among some that we all work so hard to prevent. As always, students should know that our staff are available and accessible for them. Parents can encouraged their child(ren) to seek out a trusted adult, school counselor/social worker, or administrator about any residual trauma from these events. While intruder alerts are required in schools (and that is not what Friday's event was), we expect them to be pre-announced so that students and staff can mentally prepare for them. If you need more information about this, please call CHS Principal Lock at 639-5000 or Superintendent Vilardo at 639-1000.
