Empower 

Empower is our district's Remote Learning Management System for accessing assignments, turning in work, and seeing how well students are meeting standards.  Each student has a unique login and password, and each guardian has a unique login and password.

Internet Connection 

how do I set up my hot spot?
what should i do if THE PAGE WILL NOT LOAD?
  • This is an internet connection issue. There is nothing you can do except to try to access the website later.
What should i do if i keEP GETTING KICKED OUT OF TEAMS?
  • This has to do with your internet connection. Try joining the live chats without your video on, this will reduce the amount of bandwidth you are using. Unfortunately, there isn't much else you can do.
what should i do if A CONTENT KEEPER MESSAGE appears AND i'm NOT ABLE TO MOVE FOWARD?
  • Enter your Microsoft username (ex. 32smithj) and password. It may take more than one attempt to login before it will work. 

what should i do if i caN'T GET CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET.
  • 5th to 12th grade devices can try disabling Global Protect software using these instructions
  • Carl Sandburg 2nd and 3rd grade devices have a wireless switch on the back of the computer that might have gotten switched off.

LAPTOP

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I CAn't get signed in to my device?
  • Enter your Microsoft user name (ex. 32smithj) and password.  Remember that passwords are case-sensitive.  If you still have trouble, contact the e_learning help line.
  • If you get a message about "can't sign in with these credentials", call the e_learning help line.
HOW DO I RESTART MY COMPUTER?
  • Click the Start button, click on Power and choose Restart.  Do this every few days.  It's good for the device!
HOW DO I UPDATE MY COMPUTER?
  • Click the Start button, click Settings, click Update and Security, click Check for Updates.  Once that is done, restart your computer.  Also, in the bottom corner of your screen, an icon like the one shown in this example means you have pending updates to Windows and need to restart your computer.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY SOUND ISN'T WORKING?
  • As shown in this video, right-click on the sound icon in the bottom-right corner and choose Open Sound Settings.  Click Manage Sound Devices, then click on the option under Output Devices and use the Test button.  If you still don't hear anything, bring the device to Central Office to be checked by the Tech Department.
  • If you're using headphones in a Teams meeting, be sure that you plug in your headphone BEFORE joining the meeting.
  • In a Teams meeting, check if microphone and camera options are enabled by clicking on the three-dot menu icon and selecting "Show device settings".

  • In the Teams app (not the online version which has a web address at the top), click on your profile circle in the top-right corner and choose Settings.  Click on Permissions and make sure Teams is allowed to access to mic, speakers, and notifications. 

  • In the Teams app (not the online version), click on your profile circle and choose Settings.  Click on Devices.  Be sure that all of your audio devices are listed and that your camera shows a preview of you.  You can also click the "Make a test call" button to test out your speakers and microphone as shown in this video.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY MICROPHONE ISN'T WORKING?
  • Click the Start button, then choose Settings.  Click on System, then click on Sound.  In the Input section, look for "Test your microphone" and see if, when you talk, the blue bar moves to recognize the sounds.  If not, click on Manage Sound Devices.  Under Input Devices, click on your microphone and be sure it is Enabled.  If you still have trouble, bring the device to Central Office to be checked by the Tech Department.

HOW DO I MAKE A SOUND RECORDING?
  • Click the Start button, then scroll down to find the Voice Recorder app and choose it.  Click the blue button to start a recording.  The file will save in your Documents/Sound recordings folder.
HOW DO I TAKE A PICTURE or a video WITH MY LAPTOP?
  • Click the Start button, then scroll down to find the Camera app and choose it.  The file will save in your Pictures/Camera Roll folder.
HOW DO I TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY DEVICE?
  • Elementary kids should watch this video.

what should i do if i waNT TO PRINT SOMETHING?
  • The school isn't requiring students to print during remote learning and district devices are not set up to print.
  • You will need to use a personal device in order to print.

MICROSOFT 365

Microsoft 365 includes apps for Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive.

  • To access this account and its apps anytime, go to www.office.com and sign in with your school issued email address and password. (ex. 25smithj@charleston.k12.il.us)
  • To switch to other apps, click the waffle (app launcher)

Outlook (Email)
  • For security purposes, students can only send and receive emails to other @charleston accounts.
  • Students should check their email multiple times a day during remote learning.  
  • Email attachments are limited to 20MB.
  • This handout explains how to send an email and include an attachment.
  • Here's some good advice for sending emails to teachers:

ONEDRIVE 

Cloud storage makes files more easily accessible no matter where you are or what device you are using.  You can also share files with other classmates and teachers.

  • When uploading a file to OneDrive, the limit is 100MB. 
  • This handout explains how to upload and share files in OneDrive and how to submit them to Empower.

Word 

Word processing program allows users create documents such as essays, reports, letters, and flyers with graphics.

  • When you first access Word, PowerPoint, or Excel, you may see the following screen.  Be sure to "Sign In" with your school email and password.

  • If you are signed into Microsoft but are still unable to edit files, follow these directions to Activate Microsoft.
  • The app version of Word has limited capabilities.  Click "Open in Desktop App" to have the full version of the program!

EXCEL 

Excel is spreadsheet software which allows users to organize data into rows and columns and create charts to illustrate that data.

MICROSOFT TEAMS

Microsoft Teams, part of Microsoft 365, is a video chat space used for live and recorded class meetings

HOW TO DO I SIGN IN TO TEAMS TO WATCH A MEETING?
  • Option 1) Sign in to Microsoft 365 and click on the Teams app, as shown in the picture below.  This handout and this video can help.

  • Option 2) Sign in through Clever.  Watch this video to learn how.
  • Option 3) Open the Teams app from your desktop or click Start, scroll down to Microsoft Teams and click it.
Once I'm in teams, HOW DO I JOIN A MEETING?
  • Calendar icon:  If your teacher schedules meetings in advance, they will show up in your calendar.  If a meeting is actively occurring, click the "Join" button.  If a teacher prefers to do a "Meet Now", then it will NOT show up in the calendar.

  • Teams icon:  Click the Teams icon and then click on the class you want to attend.  Look for a purple camera icon and purple section saying "Meeting now" and click the "Join" button.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TEAMS ONLINE AND THE TEAMS APP?

  • The Teams app needs updated periodically.  Review this handout to learn how.
HOW DO I CHANGE TO my VIEW TO SEE EVERYONE IN MY MEETING AT ONCE?
  • Large gallery view is 7x7 grid, allowing you to see up to 49 people at a time.  "Together" mode is a fun way to see everyone in auditorium-like view.  These news views are not enabled by default.
  • First, you will need to be sure you have updated teams following these instructions.  Then, when you're in a meeting you will have the option to select one of these other views instead of the smaller gallery grid.

CAN I GET TEAMS ON MY PHONE?

  • Yes, just go to the App store and then you can join meetings when you're on the go!
HOW DO I PIN A PARTICIPANT SO THE FOCUS STAYS ON THAT VIDEO?
  • Hover over the video of the participant you want to focus on, then right-click and choose "Pin".  You can also click on the three-dot icon of a participant to find the Pin feature.  You can pin multiple people if needed, and you can "un-pin" someone.

WHAT IS THE LOBBY?
  • The Lobby is a virtual waiting room where a student waits to enter a meeting until the teacher admits them.
how do i find recorded class meetings?
WHY DO I KEEP GETTING KICKED OUT OF TEAMS?
  • This has to do with your internet connection.  Try joining live chats without your video on, as this will reduce the amount of bandwidth you are using.  Unfortunately, there isn't much else you can do other than keep trying to reconnect.
HOW DO I DELETE CANCELLED MEETINGS FROM MY CALENDAR?
  • To clean up a messy calendar, you can right-click on an event, choose Remove from calendar, and then either choose to remove the one occurrence of the meeting or the entire series of reoccurring meetings.

WHY DO SOME MEETINGS NOT SHOW UP ON MY CALENDAR?
  • Some teachers choose to start a "Meet Now" instead of pre-scheduling meetings through the calendar. You will have to open that particular class and then look for the Join button.

PDF EDITING

The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file format that allows the document to be viewed and printed the same way on any device. Many paper worksheets and resources that teachers used to distribute as a physical copy now have to be distributed in PDF format.  When you open a PDF file, by default it opens in the browser Microsoft Edge, and you are very limited in what you can do to the PDF file.  

In order to have more options when editing a PDF document, you need to open it with a different app. You do that by right-clicking on the file and choosing “Open With”.  Once you are done editing the file, you will have to save a new revised version of the file to be submitted to your teacher.

HOW DO I EDIT A PDF USING WORD?
  • Word can be used to open a PDF, but they don't always look the same after you open it. This handout shows you how.
HOW DO I EDIT A PDF USING ADOBE ACROBAT?
  • Although many of the tools on the right side are not included with our version of Acrobat, there is still so much we can do to the PDF using the Comment tools and the Fill & Sign tools! Scroll to page 2 of this handout to learn about all of Adobe's "Comment" tools that can be used to edit the PDF.
  • If a teacher has shared a PDF in Empower, watch this video to see how to download it, open it with Acrobat, edit it with the Comment tools, save it, and upload it to Empower to turn in your assignment.
HOW DO I EDIT A PDF JUST USING the EDGE browser?
  • The Edge browser only has a simple pencil icon to write on a PDF.  Watch this video to see how.

Skyward

Skyward is our district's Student Information System for accessing grades, report cards, attendance records, and food service accounts.  

  • Each student can sign in to Skyward using their Microsoft username and password.
