Dear Jefferson families, Did you know that Jefferson has a Junior Master Gardener Club that is sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension? We have chosen to do several service projects to help out in our community. One of those projects is a canned food drive and we want to inform you that there are donation boxes around the school. So far, we have collected 17 cans of food for the Food Pantry. If you have cans to donate, we would appreciate it. If you would prefer to donate money, that can be collected in the office. You can donate change, bills, or checks made out to the Charleston Food Pantry. Thank you and have a great day, The Junior Master Gardeners (4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Students)

Junior Master Gardeners food drive
My name is McKenna Campbell, and I am a leader. For my writing assignment, I had to teach the class about a need in the world, and convince my classmates to do something about it. My focus was on cancer…a topic near to my heart, because my little brother, Whyatt, has brain cancer. I wanted to raise money for the hospital. When I was a little girl, I remembered the money boxes set out for donations, and I would always put some money in. So, I thought, let’s set up a group and raise some money. My teacher had a donation of ribbon and cloth flowers. I led the group in the crafting and selling of bookmarks, rings, necklaces, headbands, etc. I remember the day the biggest amount of money raised was on Mother’s Day. Everyone wanted to buy something for their mothers. I was happy that some people just wanted to donate, and not even buy anything. It feels so good to be able to give back to the hospital that is doing so much for Whyatt and the rest of my family.

Q: How has Junior Master Gardeners been going? A: It's been good. I like the food. I especially liked the spinach quesadillas. Q: What did you like about them? A: I liked the spinach in the quesadillas. I've never had spinach in them before...just cheese. Now I want to make them for my family. Before gardening club, I had never cooked food for my family. Once we made it here, I said, "This is so easy! I'm gonna go get a cutting board and a knife. It was good and easy to make."

Jefferson 4th graders in Mrs. White's art classes have been learning the history of the Kente cloth. Kente is connected with Ewe and Ashanti people of Ghana and arose first in West Africa during the 17th century. They are creating their own Kente cloth weavings and then drawing Kente cloth designs on them.
