Author Directions

The lead author should be listed by Last Name, First Name. If this person is the editor, check the Editor box.

The secondary author should be listed as First and then Last with no comma. If this person is the editor, check the Editor box.

If there are more than two authors, check the More Than Two Authors box.

The author section will end with a period after you hit the Add to Works Cited button. You do not need to put the period in yourself.

Title Directions

Type the title of the webpage (not the title of the website, just the single page you are on).

Type the chapter or section titles if only using a single chapter or section of a book. If you are using the whole book, skip this section.

The title will automatically be put in quotation marks after you hit the Add to Works Cited button at the bottom.

No quotes or period necessary.

Title of Chapter in Book

Container Directions

The container is the source as a whole such as the website name (not the individual webpage), books on a single topic, magazines, newpapers, or reference books. There is always a container.

The container will be italicized in the Works Cited.

The container will end with a period if you have not entered a title, otherwise, the container will end with a comma.

This part is only for books and only when there are contributors listed on the title page of the book.

If there are other contributors (such as an editor, translator, content consultant, illustrator, or other contributor), the works cited will start with "Edited by John Doe" or "edited by John Doe" depending other whether there is a period or comma in front of it.

Number Directions

This is only for print sources that have a number on the title page. That usually is for magazines, newspapers, or other periodicals and may be called the volume number.

Date Directions

List the date published (copyright date, date posted online, or the date last updated) in the order of day then month then year with no commas in between like 19 Jan 2017.

If you can't find a full date, use the most accurate you can find even if it's only a single year or range of years.
