Eighth Grade

For core classes, eighth grade is split into two teams, red and gold. Each team includes a teacher for English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, and Social Studies, as well as a Learning Behavior Specialist (LBS1).

Ashley Oliver

Ashley Oliver ~ ELA

Hello!! I'm Mrs. Oliver and I am teaching ELA for the 8th grade Red Team this year. Although I have been involved with the district as a substitute teacher and as a paraprofessional, this will be my first year as a core classroom teacher. I am an Illinois transplant after growing up in Oklahoma, living in San Antonio, TX and Missouri. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and adult children, reading books, and traveling. Please let me know if I can help you in anyway!!

Brittany Clough

Brittany Clough ~ Math

Hello and welcome to 8th grade! I am Miss Clough and I teach Math for the 8th Grade Red Team!! This will be my third year teaching 8th grade math but my first year here in Charleston!! I graduated with my Bachelors degree from Illinois State University in 2020 and am currently working towards my Masters degree at EIU. I was born and raised in a town right off the coast in Florida and moved up to McHenry, Illinois nine years ago! I recently just moved to the area this summer. In my free time, I love being outside, reading, traveling to new places and spending time with friends and family! Never hesitate to reach out with any questions/concerns! This year is going to be great!

I have been a Science and Physical Education teacher since 1998. I'm currently teaching 8th grade Science at the Middle School and am the Charleston High School golf coach. My wife also teaches in the Charleston School District and all three of my sons have been Charleston students.

Bill Standerfer ~ ELA

I have been teaching in the school district since 2017, and I currently teach English Language Arts on the 8th Grade Gold Team at CMS. I have also been coaching middle school basketball since 2017, and I started coaching track & field in 2022. I absolutely love working at the middle school! I met my wife at Eastern Illinois University, where I graduated in 2016. We have two children, Weston and Emsley. I love to spend as much time as I can with my family! I also like to fish, go bike riding, and play pick-up basketball.

Spencer Spear

Spencer Spear ~ Math

Welcome! Mr. Spear has been teaching 8th grade math at Charleston CUSD 1 since 2020, is a CBE Pilot Teacher, and coaches the CMS Scholastic Bowl team. He is from Hoopeston, IL, home of the Cornjerkers, and earned his bachelor's degree in education in Fall 2009. Prior to teaching at Charleston, he has taught at Sangamon Valley Middle School (Illiopolis, IL), Jane Long Middle School (Bryan, TX), and Neoga Elementary and Junior High Schools (Neoga, IL). Mr. Spear resides in Charleston with his wife and two children, loves family time, and enjoys spending time outdoors. Feel free to contact Mr. Spear with any questions/concerns!

Andrea Miller

Andrea Miller ~ Science

I am a 2005 graduate from Newton Community High School. I graduated with a Bachelors degree from EIU in 2009 and I earned my Masters degree in 2017. I have been teaching since 2010. I started teaching 8th grade Science at Charleston in 2013. I love the Charleston Community and teaching at the Middle School. In my free time, I enjoy being outside, jeeping, and canoeing. I love spending time with family and friends. My husband and I live in Cumberland County with our children Vivian and LeRoy. I look forward to working with your student this year!

Michelle Dow ~ Social Studies

I started my teaching career in Chrisman, Illinois as a high school LBS 1 for 11 years. I have worked in Charleston school district since 2006. I have had the privilege of teaching 4th grade at Jefferson and 7th and 8th grade at the Middle School. In 2020 I began teaching 8th grade Social Studies. Middle schoolers are my true love.
