Carl Sandburg Elementary School serves students in first through third grades. There are multiple sections of each grade and each classroom is staffed by enthusiastic and dedicated teachers. The Carl Sandburg curriculum is aligned to Common Core Standards in English Language Arts and MathematicsNext Generation Science Standards and Illinois State Learning Standards for Social SciencesPhysical Development & HealthFine Arts, and Social Emotional Learning. The district curriculum drives instruction in the classrooms, but each teacher provides much more in depth coverage of the necessary skills and enhances and enriches the curriculum with his or her own unique style of teaching and based on the unique needs of each student. The children are challenged and inspired to do their best.

In addition to the core subjects, the students receive instruction in the music, art, and physical education and media/technology. Support programs include Title I reading and math, speech and language, resource instruction for student with learning disabilities, counseling, and social work services. Full time support staff (paraprofessionals) assist the students directly in the classroom. We are lucky to have a school health care professional that serves the building five days a week. All are also supported by the organizational skills of two full-time secretaries, one part-time secretary, and the maintenance skills of three full-time custodians.

The building is wirelessly networked. This provides each student and staff member with access to the Internet anywhere within the building. All classrooms have Smart Boards and laptop computers to enhance instruction. Carl Sandburg houses two full-sized computer labs, where students are able to research, create, publish, and read as a complement to the curriculum.

Carl Sandburg Elementary School staff are always finding ways to improve. We value professional development in a variety of areas. Our teachers collaborate with their colleagues in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), participate in professional development activities during monthly early dismissals, observe each other in classrooms, and attend workshops/conferences. Some focus areas for our professional growth include: reading and writing workshop, math workshop, understanding poverty, social/emotional learning, and Common Core State Standards. Staff members also serve on various school and district committees. Our district values the input of its' staff and practices shared decision making.
