My name is Eddie Williams and I am the Principal at Carl Sandburg Elementary School.
I grew up in Shelby county, before transitioning back to Coles county. My wife and I are both in the educational field, with our two children. I enjoy spending time with my family, music, sports, and being outside.
I attended Lake Land College where I received my Associate’s Degree, before transitioning to Eastern Illinois University, in Charleston. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in reading and language arts. Along with my degree, I was able to receive endorsements in social science, and general music. I taught in Mattoon for 10 years, after completing my student teaching there. As I taught, I coached many sports such as basketball, volleyball, and track.
I earned my Masters in Educational Leadership from Eastern Illinois University. I was hired in 2018 at Charleston CUSD # 1 as the Assistant Principal at Charleston Middle School and Jefferson School. Along with the Assistant Principal roles, I was also the Athletic Director at Charleston Middle School. In 2019, I was hired as the full time Assistant Principal at Jefferson School. As that year progressed, an opportunity arose to join the team at Carl Sandburg, and I was ready and willing to take on the principal role there.
Carl Sandburg is a great school, where our goal is for every student to grow in leadership. Through the student’s academic, and social-emotional journey from 1st grade to 3rd grade, the administration and staff at Carl Sandburg are ready to serve our students and families.
My name is Abbie Schmitz and I am the Assistant Principal at Carl Sandburg Elementary School.
I am from Northbrook, IL where I attended school K-12. I came to Charleston to attend EIU from 2009-2013. While at EIU I was a member of the track and field team focusing on pole vault. I student taught at Mattoon Middle School and then accepted a job at Charleston Middle School teaching 8th grade reading and language arts. I taught at CMS for 6 years. While teaching at CMS, I coached middle school cheerleading, was the student council sponsor and coached high school boy’s track.
During my time teaching at CMS I completed my Master’s Degree in Elementary Education while earning a Reading Endorsement as well. Once I completed this degree, I was fortunate enough to begin my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, which I finished in 2020. I am very excited to join the Carl Sandburg family!
