Students and Families, We will be conducting the required SAT testing for all Juniors on April 13th. For testing, nearly all classrooms and all staff will be utilized to meet SAT guidelines, student accommodations, and Covid-19 protocols. As a result, all freshmen, sophomores, and seniors will be utilizing a remote learning day for all Gold Day classes. Students in those grades will be able to work on current and missing assignments and projects. There will be no live instruction on April 13th. Students can expect to hear from their Gold day teachers on course-specific expectations for that day. JUNIOR SENIOR GALA!!! Charleston High School will be hosting a Junior Senior Gala instead of a traditional Prom to comply with IDPH and ISBE guidelines during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Junior Senior Gala will be a socially distanced seated event where students can reserve tables for their party. During the event, dessert and refreshments will be served and entertainment will be provided. Masks will be required to be worn, except when actively eating and drinking. Reservation forms and guest forms can be picked up outside Mrs. Doughty's room, 208, and in the office. Date: May 1, 2021 Time: Doors open at 6:30, the event will be from 7:00-9:00 pm Place: West Gym and Baker Gym will be utilized Dress code: The dress code in the student handbook applies, formal and casual dress are both acceptable. You can attend home Charleston Trojan Sporting events if you have been been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, meaning your final vaccination was at least 14 days prior to the event you wish to attend. The Illinois Department of Public Health has recommended to the Coles County Health Department that all Charleston High School JV and Varsity Boys Basketball Student-Athletes and coaches quarantine through February 20. Good morning, Please remember that completing the FAFSA is now a graduation requirement! All students planning to go on to college should complete FAFSA if they haven't already done so. If your student is not planning to attend college, they can complete the waiver which can be found on the guidance page on the CHS website or your student can stop by the guidance office for a copy. CHS is sponsoring a Blood Drive at Unique Suites Hotel from 1-6 on Monday, November 30. We already have 16 donors signed up online. The Red Cross is still doing the COVID antibody testing for free with each completed donation which is an added bonus. The plasma of donors with COVID antibodies has been very helpful in the treatment of those currently fighting the virus.
Due to recent mitigations put in place by IDPH and IHSA, all high school athletics are temporarily put on pause, effective today 11/20/20. There will be no open gyms, practices, conditioning, or competition during this time. The only exception would be if the activity takes place outdoors, with 10 or less participants who are socially distanced and wearing a face covering. IHSA will discuss the restart of the winter athletic season at their December board meeting.

Saturday was an incredible day of Trojan Athletics! At the Cross Country Regional Meet, our girls' team placed 2nd and advanced to Sectionals. The team was led by Megan Garrett with a 4th place overall finish and Grace Spoonhour with a 11th place finish! On the boys' side, Luca Carcasi qualified for sectionals as well, with an 18th place finish. At the Girls' Swim Sectional, Charleston placed 3rd overall as a team! Angie Coe won all four of her events, and set pool records in each of them! Ava Zheng, Molly Weber, and Delaney Goddard also scored in events contributing to the team success. We had personal best times in 9 of 15 swims and season best swims in 14 of 15 swims. Great job everyone!

Over the next couple weeks Charleston High School will be posting videos going over the specifics of the CHS reopening plan for students returning to in-person instruction and students remaining in remote learning. The plan can be found in its entirety on our website. Transportation: Students and their families are encouraged to provide their own transportation if possible. Students who ride the bus will report to door #5 for their health screening. Students that are driving themselves to school will also utilize door #23. (Door #23 is located on the north side of the building between the cafeteria and the media center.) Students that are being dropped off will report to door #5 for their health screening. (Door #5 is located at the Baker gym entrance on the south side of the building.) Arrival: Doors will not open until 7:50. Tutorial begins at 8:20 Class begins at 8:40 As students line up for health screening social distancing guidelines should be maintained. After a student’s health screening has been completed, a student will report directly to their tutorial class (even if it is before 8:20) unless they are eating breakfast then they will report directly to the cafeteria. Students that are eating breakfast will report directly to their tutorial period after they have finished breakfast. Tutorial class is determined by a student’s first class of the day. Today is day number two of SAT testing here at CHS. Students that are not testing should utilize today to connect with teachers and work to complete any missing assignments. Students are encouraged to reach out to their teachers with any questions. As a reminder CHS does not schedule parent-teacher conferences specifically on October 15th and 16th, but rather throughout the year on an as needed basis.

The yearbook staff is still working online during the Governor's Stay at Home Executive Order. The yearbook will include pictures of daily activities. Just think when you tell your grandkids about the pandemic someday - you can use the yearbook as proof. We hope to see you soon.
From CHS art teacher Mrs. Siegel: Students in Drawing & Painting engaged in peer critiques of their apple practice paintings. They learned how to use oil paints following along w/a YouTube video tutorial after Mrs. Siegel taught them techniques using watercolor & acrylic paints. Students will now plan and complete 4 original paintings.
Due to public health concerns, both CHS indoor track meets at EIU that were scheduled for March 14th and March 21st have been cancelled.

Mrs. Neal’s Advanced Foods courses had some surprise judges for their Hamburger Throw Down Competition today. Students were given only 30 minutes to cook and assemble their culinary creations. They were judged on their Plating Abilities, Creativity, and Overall Flavor Profile. The winning burgers were a Spicy Pepperoni and Bacon burger from 2nd hour, and a Stuffed Bacon and Cheese burger from 3rd hour.

The CHS Interact Club is proud to welcome back Mustache March! Nine teachers are raising money for a local family battling cancer. Any teacher who raises over $500 will keep their mustache through April. Donations may be dropped off at the CHS main office; checks should be made out to CHS Interact Club, and you can vote for the teacher in the memo line. Student Council will be hosting the Sadie Hawkins Dance at CHS Baker Gymnasium on Saturday, February 22nd from 7-10pm. Tickets will be on sale from Febrary 17th to the 21st for $5.00 each. Tickets will be $10.00 at the door.
