I-SHARPEN Project

The I-SHARPEN Project is a critical addition to the programs offered at Jefferson Elementary. The one skill that will have an impact on their achievement in all other areas of their schoolwork and daily life is reading. The I-SHARPEN Project has replaced the ASP and will provide students with assistance with reading for 20 minutes a day, three days a week. Tutors and volunteers are trained in reading practice strategies such as Paired Reading, Repeated Readings, and Readers Theatre in order to help students improve their overall reading fluency and comprehension. The I-SHARPEN project will also provide assistance with improving math skills for 20 minutes along with an option for homework assistance for 20 minutes if needed. Providing time to practice reading and math in a fun, motivating, and engaging manner is critical. For students in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades, this is their last chance to receive some interventions before they move on to the middle and high schools. The program is for one semester.

Character Education

On a monthly basis our guidance counselor presents various topics related to building strong character within every classroom.  Through this program students engage in hands-on activities and will goal set.  In conjunction to this program the Jefferson students participate in Service Learning with an effort to help our community.

Band

The Jefferson Band program is offered to 5th and 6th grade students.  All band rehearsals are held at the beginning of the school day.  Group lessons are scheduled for each student twice a week during regular school hours.  In addition to the bands weekly rehearsal, public performances are scheduled throughout the school year concluding with a combined band concert in the spring.

Basketball Program

A comprehensive basketball fundamentals program is available to all interested boys and girls in grades five and six.  Volunteer coaches are required for the program.  Each team plays several scheduled games.  A tournament at the end of the program is optional.  The purpose of this program is to provide all students the opportunity to participate, while focusing in on the basic skills of the game.  It is not the intention to focus on the win/loss record.

Chorus

Our chorus program is provided for fifth and sixth grade students.  The Chorus practices twice each week during the activity periods.  At least two concerts are scheduled during the year -- one at Christmas and one in the spring.  Members of chorus have the option of joining Show Choir, which meets every Friday during activity period. Show choir will perform at least one piece at each concert.

Student Council

Offered to students in Grades 4, 5, & 6.  The Student Council members are elected to represent each fourth, fifth, and sixth grade homeroom.  Being a Student Council member is an honor and a privilege which also carries some responsibilities.
