Carl Sandburg Elementary

About Us

Carl Sandburg Elementary School serves students in first through third grades.  There are multiple sections of each grade and each classroom is staffed by enthusiastic and dedicated teachers.  The Carl Sandburg curriculum is driven by the district curriculum profiles for first, second and third grades.  These profiles were developed by the classroom teachers.  The district curriculum insures that the basics are covered, but each teacher provides much more in depth coverage of the necessary skills and enhances and enriches the curriculum with his or her own unique style of teaching.  The children are challenged and inspired to do their best.

In addition to the basics, the students receive instruction in the use of the media center, music and art education and physical education.  Support programs include Reading Recovery, Title 1 reading and math, speech and language, resource instruction for student with learning disabilities and counseling.  Full time building aides assist the teachers directly in the classroom.  All are ably supported by the organizational skills of two full-time secretaries and one part-time secretary and the maintenance skills of three full-time custodians.

The building is entirely networked.  This local area network provides access for each classroom to the Internet as well as direct access to each classroom.  Several of the building teachers have received training in developing web pages and are sharing their expertise with the other staff persons in the building as well as the district.

Carl Sandburg Elementary School is a Professional Development School with strong ties to Eastern Illinois University.  A Professional Development School works to address support of children's learning, staff development, preservice teacher preparation, and research.  The Action Team for School, Family and Community Partnerships (or Action Team for short) is made up of teachers, parents, community members, EIU staff and the building administrator, serves as a steering committee for the building helping to establish the mission of the school.  The committee works to develop  a family and community atmosphere at Carl Sandburg School.
