History

We have finished Unit 6 on the "Struggle Over Culture" and now will be studying about how "Modern American Emerges." Our focus will be on the changes that took place in American society during the latter part of the nineteenth century to World War I. There will be no projects to complete during this part of Unit 7, the unit will culminate with a 100 points unit test.

Unit 7 Modern America Emerges

(1860-1918)

•        To identify factors that nurtured the industrial revolution

•          To explain how business cycles reflected rapid economic growth

•          To describe the growth of the steel and electric-power industries

•          To analyze how inventions changed American life

•          To analyze the funding for the first transcontinental railroad

•          To identify the groups that worked on the first transcontinental railroad

•          To describe the linking together of the two railroads

•          To evaluate the changes brought about by the railroads

•          To analyze the growth of corporations

•          To describe monopolies and trusts and evaluate their effects

•          To summarize the positive and negative aspects of the Gilded Age

•          To evaluate the development of the economy of the South

•          To describe working conditions in the late 1800's

•          To trace the beginnings of the labor movement

•          To evaluate union setbacks and significant strikes

•          To describe the founding of the American Federation of Labor

•        To help students describe social problems facing the nation

•        To help students identify problem solving used by individuals  to improve social

                   conditions

•          To analyze the causes of World War I

•          To describe the alliance system and its impact on the war

•          To describe significant battles of World War I and America’s involvement

•          To evaluate the home front and American sacrifices

•          To analyze propaganda and it effect on World War I

•          To identify the goals of the Progressive Movement

•          To help students understand some of the complex issues involved in the acquisition of new territory
